What is “Integrated Business Planning” (IBP)?

The IBP is a multifunctional and collaborative process that is designed to obtain an organizational consensus and thus be able to establish a clear future direction and on a single operational plan.

What is “Sales and Operations Planning” (S&OP)?

It is a process that allows the development of tactical plans to achieve a competitive advantage in the company. Integrates marketing plans as well as customer focus. The set of processes and technologies enable the organization to effectively respond to demand and supply variability with a vision of optimal performance in the market that enables a profitable supply chain.

What are the similarities between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

Both seek unification and business planning from sales to operations. Both require supporting data to help guide managers in making decisions in planning.

What are the differences between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

·       The IBP includes the strategy.

·       The IBP starts with a financial forecast of the organization, but the S&OP that originates from the supply chain and its main objective is to adjust production and sales.

·       The IBP gives visibility to the guidelines that the organization's board wants to drive to achieve measurable goals. While the S&OP is a process that helps to manage the supply and demand of manufacturers by creating a single production plan in conjunction with the Sales and Operations department.

How does the IBP process work? Describe in detail.

-        Defines a set of metrics that make it easier to track performance on outputs and inputs.

-     Runs a future scenario analysis to determine which action plans best suit the business including internal and external factors that impact demand, flexibility, and gross margin impact.

-        Provides greater visibility into supply constraints and options for adjustment.

-       Creates a supply chain model that transforms the product lifecycle by incorporating costs and risks.

-     Develops business rules that allow active management to introduce or withdraw products.

What are the challenges of IBP?

That the organization understand that the IBP is necessary, but not sufficient and the true dimension of what the process can achieve for the business.

The leadership team is prepared and committed.

Which are the most common difficulties/problems when implementing IBP? Mention them and provide examples.

-        If the S&OP process has not yet been implemented in the company or has not been stable, the IBP is too big a step. In other words, the company does not yet have a work plan system in place, or it does not have a well-developed or poorly executed system, it is difficult to carry out another more complex planning.

-        Lack of commitment in some departments. To implement IBP, it is necessary that the entire organization works together, with the same goals and aspirations.

-        The objectives and forecasts are not in sync, that is, the leaders of the organization do not have the same goals.

-        Information not available, little information and organization within the company.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of IBP?
